Tourists from all over the world, who are looking for the perfect getaway on one of Thailand s most pristine and exotic islands, should consider an unforgettable and rewarding trip to Samui Island. Officially known as Koh Samui, this breathtaking and peaceful island is a popular tourist destination, attracting more than 1.5 million tourists each year. What makes a stay in a private villa memorable is the way it can take you out of the tourist centres to enjoy a more authentic holiday. Thailand has, over the past few years, seen a large increase in the number of private villas available for holiday rent. Beyond the two well-appointed bedrooms, our property had a spacious living and dining room with its own kitchen, a maid’s room, and, at the ground level, a private swimming pool and “chill-out” area. You can also find property on some of the islands off the North East Coast. But you’ll have difficulty renting your property unless it is linked to a good five-star hotel.

Bophut has a more rustic, family atmosphere, although the beaches aren’t so good. The south of Thailand is renowned for its famous beaches and seaside resorts, such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. It lies around 85 km to east of Surat Thani and 700 km to south of Bangkok. Near the Bophut Beach lies Choengmon Beach, a highly popular recreational spot. Other famous beaches here are Big Buddha Beach, Taling Ngam, and Lipa Noi Beach. These scenic and peaceful beaches make Koh Samui a paradise for beach lovers. Koh Samui is accessible via Bangkok Airways from Bangkok, with flights taking approximately one hour (depending or aircraft chosen). These are part of the Samui Orchid Resort. The advantage here is that the villa occupants will generally be able to avail themselves of the additional facilities or services provided by the resort, albeit at resort prices. A raised and covered “sala” here offered protection from the strong midday sun and became our favourite spot, with its views over the pool.

In contrast to more mainstream locations, our stay here allowed us to discover and experience the real Thailand, off the beaten tourist track. Travel to the Northeast is recommended for those looking for a unique experience, to get away from the tourist crowds, and to immerse themselves in something new. Travel to and from the island is easy with regular international and domestic flights direct to the island as well as regular ferry crossings from Surat Thani. Phuket has an impressive portfolio of first class resorts and hotels and serves as the perfect home-base from which to explore the other provinces and islands in the region. Chaweng town is very built up with resorts stretching most of the length of the beach and shops, bars and restaurants line the streets behind.

It is a more family orientated beach with a more rustic village with a few shops and restaurants. Royal Phuket Marina and Boat Lagoon are the most developed with shops, bars and restaurants. Since then another three have been built; Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Ao Por Grand Marina. A cruise on the Chaophraya river – perhaps by privately chartered long-tail boat – is an excellent way of seeing much of the city without being reduced to tears by the traffic. Boat Lagoon also has full service facilities and a dry-dock. The main beach is Chaweng, which is a long stretch of beautiful white sand. One of the best known is a stop off just north of Hin Ta – Hin Yai, around the Lamai beach area. Lamai Beach is another great beach, famous for its thrilling nightlife. For mystical feel, visit Bophut beach, where you will find plenty of Chinese shops, excellent gift shops, and eateries serving tasty pizza. Ferries operate from Bophut pier to nearby Koh Pha Ngan.

Moreover the spot is littered with many world-class hotels, resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs. At low tide on the East Coast the water goes out a long way and reveals large areas of mud. Phang Nga Bay just off the East Coast is one of my favourite places. If that is more important to you than the convenience of having things on your doorstep, the North East could be ideal for you.
